I may take some ideas from this for the ‘Chero. I wouldn’t have thought of bracing the wheel well to other things, but it makes sense - one-point anchoring at the spring mount/whatever box isn’t that longitudinally strong, and tying to the wheel well makes for bracing the rear subframe.

But I JUST took a roll cage out of the ‘70. I went through 15 cutting wheels. And traded away all my performance drag parts for interior bits.

Slooooooooow going. Lost my garage space where I keep the ‘66 convertible, so that’s kinda in our faces. Tacked in the new driver side frame rail, but my dad and I need just a full two days with the welder to get it done and set. Will have more updates when Finals are over.

It is all kinds of wonderful! Goes into suspension upgrades and settings as well as brief suggestions for non-chassis things like brakes, cooling, and oiling. And it’s all period stuff; it was written in 1970.

No, it’s good. I raised the thresholds in the Ranchero 7”, so that takes care of the lower link, and if I brace the wheelwells while I’m reworking the B-pillars (something that needs doing) I’ll be most of the way there. The A-pillars, I’m not quite sure what I’m doing yet. What I’ve got has quite a lot of rust, so some kind of reconstructing has to take place. Perhaps stronger and tied better to the floorboard area.

Yeah, I did since I had low compression in several cylinders. The heads were dropped off at the machine shop where I had a valve job done and a new rocker/spring assembly installed (had to have the heads cut to accommodate the new parts). Once finals week is over I’ll pick them up and get the car back on the road.

Yeah, the Falcon platform ends the A-pillar with a web (2-3 layers) onto the torque box, and then the door post is below that. A drop from the intersect point straight down would actually miss the torque box and come down parallel to the door post, such as it is. IOW, I would need to cut a hole while repairing the A-pillar webs, make a post, integrate the post to the A-pillar under the webs, and seal it all back up.

I’ve been weighing up whether to fabricate a couple of roll hoops or a full-on cage for my spitfire. It could probably do with the rigidity it offers, but space is at a real premium in the cockpit...
